As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, I'm getting more and more giddy for the holiday season.

I have to confess. I am one of those people that doesn't like to think about an upcoming holiday until we've gone through the latest. So no Christmas until Thanksgiving is done, thank you very much! This of course is the complete opposite of my extended family. The day after Halloween, I start receiving calls, emails and texts inquiring on DNH Family's list to Santa. It is so against the grain for me that I find myself starting to get a bit upset. Why can't we just enjoy each of the holidays as their own? Uggg. Okay, deep breaths... Its one of those things in life that is out of your control, so dwelling on it, is no good for anyone

Okay, so as I mentioned in my pumpkin treats round up, for the first time in quite some time we're not hosting Thanksgiving at our house. What that means is that our refrigerator is not filled to the brim with all the fixings and sides gearing up for the big day. What that also means is that since all cooking and baking thoughts aren't consumed with the Thanksgiving feast, there is room for other baking cravings!!

Is it that we're not in full cooking mode for Thanksgiving or is that due to daylight savings, its getting darker earlier and the temperature is dropping, making a warm house full of the scent of vanilla more appealing? In either case, its happening at our house a little earlier this year and I'm secretly LOVING IT!

Every couple of days, one of the Diapers-n-Heels gang mentions something about cookies or dessert. So we started in on some early Thanksgiving baking. Since we will be flying, we have for the most part been trying out different cookie recipes. We've tried crispy and chewy and brownies and bars, but what we all seem to be coming back to for not only the taste but the fun of decorating them on our own, are simple sugar cookies. In walks...

    THE COOKIE THING

I was recently asked if I'd try out The Cookie Thing. Seeing as the DNH family has already started our holiday cookie making madness, I figured I'd give it a try. But first...

    What is The Cookie Thing?

Well my friends, this is one of the greatest cookie tools to happen to sugar cookies since the rolling pin. This baking tool essentially assists in rolling out your dough to the exact thickness throughout.
The tool comes with a solid maple wooden roller and four varying depth sizes of measuring boards. Placing the dough in between the boards, the tool assist in rolling it out at the depth you desire. LOVE!!! The smaller measuring board (⅛th inch) would even be good for pie crust. Okay, anyone else really hungry for some baked goods like right now? YUM!!!

    Here's how it works

1.)  Using your favorite sugar cookie recipe, make the cookie dough. Ours happens to be sweet Betty Crocker. To save on some time, here are the ingredients for her cookies:

    • cup butter or margarine, softened
    • 1teaspoon vanilla
    • ½teaspoon almond extract
    • 1egg
    • 2 ½cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1teaspoon cream of tartar
    • Granulated sugar or colored sugar (for topping)

For instructions on how to make the dough, you can find them here.

What is different about this technique from others is that once you've made your dough before you put into the refrigerator, we are going to roll it out. From the mixer, place about 2 cups worth of dough between two sheets of wax paper on a flat surface. With your hands gently press down to flatten. Then using  place the two wooden pieces (of desired thickness) on each side of the dough, leaving a few inches on each side of the dough to spread out. Begin to roll. It helps if you start in the center of the dough and roll out and them back towards you.Once you have your dough at the desired thickness place on a cookie sheet and into the refrigerator for at least two hours.

Once the dough is chilled, pull out your cookie cutters and cut away! Having all the cookies the same depth is pretty Ahhh-mazing!Look how pretty they look even before you put them into the oven? Ahhh-mazing right? After 7 minutes, pull them out and viola, you have yourself the perfect batch of equal shape and depth cookies! How great is that? Then the fun part for the kids or parties or both... decorating the cookies. What I love about all the cookies being the same, is that for those cookie cutters that might be a little more intricate than the round and heart ones I'm showing here, they keep their shape! Nothing worse than trying to distinguish on whether its a snowman or snowflake! I'm just loving everything about The Cookie Thing and can't wait to give them as presents this holiday season.

What's great is that just in time for Christmas and cookie parties! Can you think of a better gift for the baker on your list or cookie party host?

The Cookie Thing folks were so excited for us that they are offering a discount to Diapers-n-Heels readers. Woooh!
