We all know juicing is good for us. It's all over the news, social media, and in magazines. Well here's a quick run down of types of juicers, the theory behind the benefits of juicing, and our family's favorite blends.

My husband and I first got into juicing after watching an eye-opening documentary called, "The Gerson Miracle". It's a must see informational movie about curing cancer with food, in particular, juice. While no one in our family was sick, we thought why not play the preventative game and get a head start?

It was time to purchase a juicer. My husband is the king of research. He won't even buy a mechanical pencil without reading 100 reviews first. So the search was on. We knew we needed to buy a slow speed, masticating juicer, so we chose the Omega 8006. It juices, makes nut butters, and has a pasta attachment (that I've yet to try). Note: High speed juicers use centrifugal force to extract juice therefore creating heat. The heat can destroy a lot of the enzymes and nutrients we want in our juice, so make sure when purchasing, you choose a slow speed juicer.juice4

Then there's citrus juicers. We have two. An electric one that spins when pressure is applied to the top. I used to use it all the time until last year when my in-laws sent me the most amazing gift for my birthday. A Hamilton Beach Commercial Citrus Juicer. My three year old and I have a blast getting sticky and making the best orange juice in town.juice2You might be asking, why juice? Why not just throw it all in a blender and get all the fiber as well? Here's the short answer:  Juicing condenses the vitamin and mineral content of a large amount of fruits and veggies into a concentrated, more easily consumable form. For example, this morning I had an 8 ounce blend of greens and apples. That's the vitamin and mineral equivalent of 3 apples, 10 leaves of kale, and 3 leaves of chard, raw. I wouldn't even want to try to eat all that at 7 am.

    Our favorite blends…

Greens/Apples:  This is by far our favorite and one we drink most often. We grab about 30 leaves of kale and 15 leaves of chard from the garden. Juice it up, and put it in a pitcher. Then juice a huge bag of apples from our neighbor who has trees. We use separate pitchers because my husband and I enjoy different ratios when it comes to our blends.juice1Orange Power Blend:  We use the two different juicers for this one. The Hamilton Beach for the oranges and the Omega for the carrots. This blend is high in beta carotene, vitamin C, and beyond delicious.juice3When we're feeling under the weather: Apple/Ginger/Lemon. Even the baby loves this one. Use caution when adding the ginger, it can get pretty spicy. Start by trying 3 apples, 1 lemon, and a 1-inch piece of ginger.

Remember, in order to get the most nutrition out of your fruits and veggies, always buy organic. Or better yet, grow your own! Happy juicing!
