Teething has hit officially our house, and let me say, it's an experience that effects us all. I am anxiously waiting for that first tooth to break through and the noise level to return to a semi-normal state. The girl wants to chew on anything and everything right now!
The other day I was able to find "organic" teething biscuits and excitedly gave her one. She went to town on that thing! I was so happy to give her something organic to "eat". As I sat there and watched her gum that thing like nobody's business, I looked at the box, and realized that I hadn't followed one of my own simple rules- Read the Label. Needless to say, I had fallen for the adorable packaging, and was giving my 5 month old total crap. I turned to my good friend Pinterest and searched homemade teething biscuits. I found a great blog called Sweets Treats and More, and couldn't believe how easy the recipe was. 6 ingredients, all of which I had in my kitchen already.

I made up a batch while she was napping. The Pinterest pictures looked so cute- little heart shaped biscuits. When I made mine however, I didn't have a heart shaped cookie cutter (not going to lie, I considered going to the store and buying some right then), so I used a mason jar lid and made uniformed circles instead. Of course they were not cute enough for my liking, so I drew hearts and K's on them… you know…to personalize them just for her (because a 5 month old obviously cares about that kind of thing , right??) And in to the oven they went.
They baked for 15 minutes, and I loved the smell they were making in my kitchen, just like banana bread. I of course had to taste one when they came out. Not too bad. They taste just like bland banana bread. By the time she woke up from her nap, they had cooled for about 30 minutes. When I sat her in her chair and gave her a biscuit fresh from mama's kitchen, I like to think her eyes lit up with appreciation of what I had made just for her (Ha!).
She immediately put it in her mouth and once again went to town. I was actually happy that I went with the circle shape. We haven't started her on solids yet, so it was a shape and size that was easily manageable for her; plus there were no sharp edges or pieces that would go too far back in her mouth and gag her. The biscuit got nice and soggy and dissolved rather quickly in her mouth. Of course you should always watch, because even though they dissolve nicely, chunks can still break off.
The biscuits are good for a few days and you can store them in the fridge or freezer (they'll keep longer in the freezer). At first I was kind of annoyed that they only last for a few days. But then I remembered that I'm giving her something fresh, and not full of preservatives. Yeah for keeping it Real!!
