My daughter has just started to read chapter books. It is such an exciting time for young readers as they learn that books can take them to faraway places, lead them into adventures, or share with them stories of situations that might be similar to what they are experiencing. Whatever the case, I love how it simply lights up their mind.
The last 3 times we've been to our public library, we have been scouring the chapter book section for young readers and have been trying to find something that is great for both my daughter and approved by me.
I will not mention the specific series that my daughter has managed to get a few of the books in her hand lately, and when she and I sat down to read them together, the gist of each book is Mean Girls at School and Revenge and Boys.
I have decided that while I understand that happens at school, it is not something I want to subject my daughter to at 8. In any case, we have been on the lookout for books that are fun, creative, and relatable.
Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker
I am HAPPY to report that Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker By Shelley Johannes is just what we have been looking for. This fresh new book (that literally comes out this WEEK) follows a zany 8-year-old who wants nothing to do with being ordinary and shares her topsy-turvy way of thinking. The story shares a great story about being yourself, friendship, family, and life from a girl who likes to flip "being normal" upside down.
From my daughter's perspective, she enjoyed that the characters in the book were her age making the entire story that much more relatable.
From Mom's perspective, I loved that it tackled friendship and relatable scenarios, but it shows with a little problem-solving and kindness, there is room for all kinds of people in our lives.
If you have a young girl chapter book reader on your hands (recommended age 9-12) , I highly recommend Beatrice Zinker, Upside down thinker.
