New Year Goal Setting for Kids
Just like adults, kids need different goals to motivate them to improve and boost their self-esteem. When a child sets a major goal and they accomplish it, they feel better and more empowered and they create good habits.
As the New Year begins, it's a great opportunity for an adventure in setting goals! Think of your long-term goals – the big dreams you have for yourself. These could be like the stars in the night sky, guiding you toward personal development and growth.
A valuable tool to help you on this journey is goal setting templates and goal tracker templates. They are like maps that help you plan your route and keep track of your progress. Imagine them as your secret companions on the exciting quest of turning your dreams into reality. So, grab your compass of determination, use these templates, and set sail on a fantastic voyage of personal success and break it down into smaller steps in the coming year!
It also teaches them about responsibility and accountability for themselves and their behavior.
Tips for Goal Setting with Kids
Let your child take the lead
Don't tell them what you want them to do, let them tell you what they want to do and guide them to choosing realistic goals. For example, one of my boys told me he wanted to go hiking on a mountain.
That's going to be nearly impossible seeing as we live in South Florida and geographically that's not happening. So together, we decided we could try to find a hiking trail in Florida that we could all do as a family. He was so happy!
Set Specific Goals
Kids can go wild when asked what they want to do. So help your child by broadening a simple goal, and narrowing down their bigger goals into very specific attainable goals. One of my boys once said he wanted to be the best baseball player on the team.
This is too broad a goal and not something you can measure so I helped him make a better plan of hitting the ball one time each game. He could track his progress, making it easier to focus on his goal.

In the corporate world, there is a term for goal setting called S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timed = S.M.A.R.T. The same goes for setting s.m.a.r.t. goals as a child.
Write it Down
It's been said you're more likely to follow through with something if you write it down! I created a simple free goal sheet for my kids that we've been using since last year that you can use too! No one says you can't achieve your goals too!
Display it
Take the worksheet and display it somewhere your kids can see it every day to stay motivated.
Be Supportive
Your child will need you to help and support them even if it's just through words of encouragement. I like to check in on my kids' progress every week to see how they're doing and let them know I'm available if they need me.
Goal Setting Process
Setting goals is like creating a treasure map for your dreams. First, start with your main goal – something you really want to achieve, like learning a new skill or getting better at a favorite hobby. This is the big "X" on your treasure map. Now, break that main goal into smaller, achievable goals, like little checkpoints leading to the big treasure. These are your short term goals, and they make the journey more fun!
Once you have your smaller goals, it's time to make actionable steps, which is like drawing the path on your treasure map. Write down the action steps, or the things you need to do, to reach each smaller goal. These are like your action items, helping you stay on the right path.
Keep it simple and clear, like following the steps of a recipe. Now, you have a map with achievable goals and an action plan with simple steps. With this treasure map, you're ready for an exciting adventure to make your dreams come true!
Printable Goal Setting Worksheet
I created this super simple worksheet to get my kids to set some goals at the beginning of each year. Each space has a prompt to get them started and they fill in "I will try..." "I will learn how to..." "I will read..." and "I will visit..."
You can use this as a starting point with big, broad goals or use it to narrow down specific goals. If your kiddos are too small to write on their own, they can use the space to draw and you can help them with the words.
Helping kids set short-term goals or long-term goals gives them a sense of purpose. Life goals can give them a long-term vision of how they want their life to go!
Are you ready to set goals with your kids? It's going to be a great year!
