Family Staycation San Diego - Welk Resort

Looking for a Family Fun Staycation in San Diego? Then you will definitely want to check out the beautiful Welk Resort San Diego!

This was our family's first family staycation San Diego style at the Welk Resort Escondido! Special thanks to Welk Resort for inviting us and hosting our stay.

Welk Resort North San Diego

Welk Resort has been a staple in North San Diego for over 50 years. It was originally bought by the entertainer Lawrence Welk where he had the vision to turn the 450 acre into 2 golf course, theatre and luxury villas nestled into the hillside resort that is there today.

I remember visiting Welk Resort when I was a child and remember having the most magical time with my entire family.

Being back with my family gave me some of the same magical feels and I am so excited to show you all that we did!

Here is a look into our weekend of family fun and all there is to do at the resort and the surrounding areas durin our staycation San Diego.

Accommodations

We stayed in one of their luxury one bedroom suite with full kitchen and laundry. There was a king bed in the room and a queen pull out in the sofa.

In our room there was a large balcony connected the living room with the king bedroom. It looked right onto the golf course and hillside and was so pleasant.

The beds were super comfy and we absolutely loved the idea of having a full refrigerator and kitchen to bring and cook our own meals while we were there!

Resort Activities

If your family is anything like mine, then keeping active is a must!

There were a ton of fun activities to do around the resort that could definitely keep you all busy including:

5 fabulous pools with cabanas, spas, and slides
a 6000 square foot fitness center with yoga and spin classes
Two beautiful golf courses including alternative FlingGolf (Frisbee) and Footgolf (Soccer)
Tennis Courts, Basketball Courts, Ping Pong Tables, Pickleball Courts, Archery, Horseshoes, Giant Checkers and Shuffleboard.
S'mores Kits

They also have some other activities they call INSPIRED For You™. These are unique to the Welk Resort San Diego and include: Electric Bike Rentals, Rock Climbing, Ax Throwing, Escape Room, Arts and Crafts, and Underwater Virtual Reality Experience.

Here are the activities we were able to experience during our stay.

Pools and Slides

We of course had to check out as many of the swimming pools as we could.

Two of the main pools have super fun water slides that the kids could spend their time running up and giggling down.

Escape Room

Escape rooms are one of my families absolute favorite things. If you are not familar with an escape room, it is a room or rooms where you are "locked" into (you are not really locked in) in order to get out you have to solve a series of puzzles to get out in a certain amount of time.

The escape room at Welk was Survivor Island themed and was an absolute blast!

Rock Climbing

Inside their incredible fitness center is this two story rock climbing wall.

It was safe and fun for the whole family to try.

Archery and Ax Throwing

The last of the activities that we tried during our visit was the archery and ax throwing.

Both activities were safe for the kids to try and fun to try our hand at something we may not have tried before.

The archery setup was fabulous as the tips of the arrows are velcro.

It gives you a piece of mind that there aren't real arrows flying around.

Next to the archery is an ax throwing station. This was also "family friendly" in that the axes were made of plastic and they were throwing into a cardboard target.

So much fun trying our hand at both ax throwing and archery and definitely one of the highlights of our day.

Dining & Shopping

Due to the fact that visit to Welk was post covid, their dining options throughout the resort was still limited. I cannot speak to when they will have everything up and running at full capacity. Their main Canyon Grille Restaurant was open throughout the weekend for dine-out services which was more fine dining and extremely delicious. They had two fun bar and grills at the pool during the day as well as golf snack shack located on the 9th hole across from the fish pond and an express Pizza Hut.

They also have a Market at the resort as well an on site Starbucks.

Local San Diego Activities

The Welk Resort is located in North San Diego which is not too far from a bunch of different things to do in San Diego. Some of our favorites include: Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, La Jolla, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Legoland, and Carlsbad Flower Fields.

Staycation San Diego Packages

The resort has a few fun vacation packages worth checking out that include tickets to the San Diego Zoo and or Angels Game.

As part of our San Diego staycation, we had a fun day at the San Diego Zoo.

We saw flamingos, monkeys, tortoises, snakes, birds, elephants, giraffes, lions and more!

The tigers and hippos were some of our favorites.

It was a spectacular end to fun packed weekend with Welk Resort.
