Ingredients For Fried Dill Pickles
This delicious appetizer only uses a handful of ingredients and it is truly simple to make. We will share the basic recipe we love to use, but depending on your family and friends' taste buds, you can add a kick to the recipe by adding cajun seasoning to the flour mixture or hot sauce to the egg mixture, but that is completely optional. The key is to keep it simple and you will have your guest begging for these babies every game day!
Pickles: You can start with whole dill pickle spears and cut them, or use the pre-cut dill pickle slices. The funny thing about pickle lovers is that they have their favorite pickles whether it's their favorite brand or the type (dill pickles, bread and butter pickles, or sweet pickles). You do you, but for this recipe, we're going with dill pickles (my favorite :))
Flour: The best thing about this recipe is that it can be adjusted if you have any dietary restrictions. We use all-purpose flour, but if you want to keep this gluten-free, you can absolutely swap it out for your flour of choice.
Egg: For this recipe, we are using a simple egg wash before the dredge. You can also use a buttermilk mixture for an added tanginess, but we rarely have buttermilk on hand, so we tend to go with egg.
Breading: We enjoy panko bread crumbs mixed with parmesan cheese for this recipe. You can always add your own spices to this mixture
Oil: I recommend using a good neutral oil for this recipe like vegetable oil, peanut oil, or canola oil. You will want to stay away from olive oil as it has a lower smoking point than the other oils.
How to Make Fried Pickles
First start by laying out your pickle slices and pat them dry with paper towels. Pickles are stored in liquid, and the key is to make sure the pickle slices are completely dry before
Place the egg in one small shallow bowl and the flour in another small shallow bowl. In the third small bowl mix the parmesan cheese and panko breadcrumbs together. Lay out your dipping station for the pickles in order of flour, egg, and parmesan-panko mixture.
Dip a pickle slice into the flour, coating both sides, then the egg also coating both sides. Place in the parmesan-panko mixture and coat with that patting the mixture into the pickle for a thick coating, then place back on your plate or cutting board. Repeat for the rest of the pickles.
Heat some vegetable oil in a frying pan on medium heat to bring the oil temperature to 375 degrees F. When the oil is ready place small batches (4-5 breaded pickles) into the oil using a large slotted spoon, cooking for about 2-3 minutes total. Be sure to move the pickles around flipping over, if needed for an even golden brown color.
Remove from the frying pan or pot onto a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack and let any excess hot oil drain off. Remember to let the oil heat get back to 375 before starting the next batch.
Serve with a side of ranch dressing or your favorite dipping sauce.
