Ornaments have been used on trees for centuries and were mainly used initially to celebrate Winter Solstice. There are also symbolic ornaments, such as a house-shaped one representing shelter and protection and heart ornaments represent that true love is in that home.
My family has a fun tradition within our home. My Christmas tree never has a theme necessarily, unless that theme is “memories”. When my husband and I had our first Christmas together, we decorated our tree with candy canes and ornaments that had been gifted to us.
We went out and each bought a new ornament to add to our tree. Every year we continued when we began having children. We had them also pick out an ornament or they could make one if they choose to. Our tree is full of crafted and unique ornaments! It is gorgeous, in my humble opinion.
Ornament Traditions Around The World
In Greece, you will see a lot of sailboats. Around Christmas time, most of the boats will be decorated with lights. It started out as celebrating the return of a family member coming back from being out at sea but then shifted into the holiday times.
India, where it is a lot warmer and traditional Christmas trees are hard to come across, you will find mango and banana trees decorated! Some people will also take mango tree leaves and use them to decorate the insides of their homes.
Night of the Radishes (La Noche de Rábanos) is a Christmas tradition in the Mexican city of Oaxaca. Crafters from all over the city will set up at a huge Holiday market on December 23. They show their skills in carving into radishes scenes like The Nativity Scene.
Crafty Christmas
While I love to craft all year, I think Holiday Crafts are my favorite. Even when the craft is kids coloring a fun design. These fun paper ornaments templates can be added to your walls or Christmas tree, or a great way to gift as holiday or Christmas cards.
