This paper straw wreath is sure to brighten up your door this holiday season.
It's December and you know what that means? Time to get the house decorated for the Christmas holiday.
You have most likely seen this wreath circling Pinterest or one of the magazines. I had a box of red paper straws left over from Made with Happy Boy's baseball birthday and figured, why not?
Supplies
- Box of paper straws - 144 quantity
- Floral Foam Ring
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
The supplies are pretty simple. I found my foam floral ring at the dollar store. As I mentioned I had the straws left over, but I'm pretty sure they sell the straws at Bed, Bath and Beyond now too.
How To Make Paper Straw Wreath
Preparing Wreath
Foam can sometimes rub off while handling it, so you will want to cover it up. I took whatever inexpensive ribbon and wrapped it to cover the ring.
In the case, you do not find a foam wreath and have only a hay straw wreath or wire wreath, I recommend coving the wreath with a thick ribbon on those too.
Cut the Straws
The second step is to cut the straws. The only challenge you'll have at doing this is that it is all dependent on the size of your floral ring. I started cutting 30 of them to about ¾ the length. For me, it came out to more than 40-50, but again it all depends.
Once you are set with the initial 30, you are ready to start gluing.
Attaching Straws
You start by alternating between the full-length straws and the ¾ size and you line straws to the inside of the ring. As you make your way around the ring you will soon find out if you are good with the 30 or if you need to cut a few more.
Once you have the bottom layer down, you will then have a better idea of how many to cut for the next layer. The second layer of straws goes in between each of the first layers of straws. Mine used roughly 40. You then cut the second layer of straws to ⅔ the length. For me, this gave enough visual distinction from the first level, if you want to cut shorter or longer, it's completely up to you.
You glue the second layer the same way you did the first, by making sure the inside of the straws lines up with the inside of the ring.
After the wreath is complete, you can add bows and ribbons to a number of different places. I've seen bows upfront. Large ribbons in the back to hang it. It's completely up to you. We decided the wreath was enough and so we added a simple ribbon on the back to hang it.
Again, as with the Lima bean wreath, this wreath is super simple and inexpensive.
