Adorable Ducks for Kids
Ducks are perfect for drawing. With their cute plump little bodies, short necks, and a variety of colors, they are a great starting point for learning about basic shapes and forms in drawing. There are lots of species of ducks to draw, from the famous green-headed mallard to cute animated duck characters, each interesting and fun.
We're going to focus on a simple cartoon duck in this guide. We're not looking to dive into the big details of a realistic drawing, but rather to keep it light and fun. This makes it simple for kids to understand and enjoy.
So we’ll break down the duck's form into simple shapes and then bring these elements together to create our charming, feathered friend.
Simple Drawing Tutorials
The beauty of this duck drawing tutorial is that it allows young artists to build on their creativity. Once they understand how to break down the form of a duck into simple, easy-to-draw shapes, they can start to play around with them, adding their own unique touches and details.
For instance, they could add eyelashes, change the locations of the eyes or beak, draw bigger or smaller wings, etc. This fun process is where the real magic happens. It's all about exploring possibilities, encouraging individuality, and most importantly, having fun.
After all, art is not about perfectly recreating what someone else has created.. It's about expression and creativity. And that's exactly what this tutorial encourages young artists to do!
Easy Animal Drawings
Once the duck's outline is complete, it’s time to add some color! This is where kids can let their imaginations soar. Ducks come in a variety of colors and patterns, from the male duck, the mallard's bright green head, to the soft brown shade feathers of the female. The choice of colors is all up to the artist.
Just remember that the purpose of this activity is not to create a crazy realistic duck, but to enjoy the drawing and coloring. It's about exploring art, developing a sense of shape and color, and most importantly, having fun. So, let's get those pencils ready, unleash our creativity, and have a great time learning to draw a duck!

How To Draw a Cartoon Duck Step By Step
Before you start drawing, we also want to make sure you have the right art supplies. Here are the drawing paper, and drawing pencils that we like to use.
So, grab your drawing materials, find a comfy spot, and let's bring your cartoon character to life on paper.
Duck's Head
The drawing is a cute cartoon-style duck and gives a basic idea of a duck sketch. You can later add small details to it and color it. Your kids will have a few good practice times, and soon they’ll be drawing a duck like a pro!
Start with the head of the duck. Draw a large oval to start. We like to bring the top of the head in slightly at the cheeks.
The next step is to draw two curved lines arching outwards from the bottom of the duck's head from the previous step right around where you think the duck's neck should be. This is the start of the duck's wings. The inside of the duck's wings should be another curved line going back up to the head, but stopping before getting all the way up to the head. Then draw a few lines along the wing to resemble feathers.
Duck's Body
Draw a small curved line from the tip of one wing to the other finishing off the full oval shape for the body of the duck. Draw a small irregular shape on the top of the duck's head for the duck's hair.
Duck's Feet
For the duck's feed draw two small rectangle shapes of the bottom of the duck's body. And instead of having squared-off ends, draw a wavy line to give the allusion to webbed duck feet.
Duck's Face
Draw a small circle for each duck's eye. Draw two eyes. For the duck's beak, draw a horizontal line in the middle of the duck's face. Above the line, draw a small curved mountain shape. Add two smaller circles in the middle of the top of the beak as the nostrils (nose holes). For the bottom of the beak, draw a small curved shape slightly smaller than the horizontal line of the mouth.
Once you have your easy duck drawing exactly how you want it, the final step is tracing over all your light lines with a sharp pencil and even outlining it all with a black marker!
The final step if you choose to is to use markers, crayons, color pencils, or paints and turn your drawing lesson into the cutest duck drawing! Different colors and vibrant colors make for a great drawing!
