Learning to Draw
Learning to draw may seem a little scary, but the best way to start is not to compare yourself to others and to follow along by reading a step-by-step tutorial like this; you can enjoy learning something new and be proud of yourself for trying.
Starting with basic shapes like squares, circles, and triangles is a great way to begin. You can try to draw circles, both a small circle and a big circle. Some may be touching, overlapping, or far apart from one another. You, the drawer, can be as creative as you want with this; do the same with other shapes.
My favorite way to learn to draw something new or get the creative juices flowing is by playing a drawing game with a friend.
One person draws a wavy line or diagonal line of sorts, then you try to draw something using that line. When you have finished, you then draw an odd shape or curved line of some sort and your friend then draws something using the line or shape you drew.
When learning to draw the most important thing to remember is to try your best! If you do that, then you are already an amazing artist!

Parts of a Fish
Before we get into the easy fish drawing, I thought it might be fun to talk about the different parts of the fish, so that when you start to draw the fish body, if we make a reference to a type of fin or part of the fish, you have something to reference.
It is estimated that there are over 20,000 different species of fish in the world. Different types of fish have different body parts that help and move through the water. Let's talk about some of these parts!
First, there's the head of the fish. This is where you'll find the fish's eyes, mouth, and sometimes even its nostrils! The mouth of the fish is where it eats its food, and some fish even have special teeth for catching their prey.
Next, we have the fish fin. Fins are like the fish's arms and legs. They help the fish swim and steer through the water. There are different types of fins, like the dorsal fin on the fish's back, the pectoral fin the side fin, and the pelvic fin or ventral fin and anal fin each a bottom fin that is on the belly of the fish to help keep them level.
Also, there's the tail fin. The fish tail is what the fish uses to move forward in the water. It's like a propeller! Some fish have tails that are shaped differently depending on where they live and what they eat.
Finally, on the rest of the body, there are other parts of the fish like the gills and the gill cover (where fish breathe and the fish scales that protect the fish like its armor. Each part helps the fish survive in its underwater world.
How To Draw a Fish Step By Step
Follow each easy step to create a simple fish drawing.
Before you start drawing, it's important to have your paper positioned correctly for what you are drawing. We recommend positioning your piece of paper horizontally. That means that the long side of your paper is at the top and bottom. This will allow you to create a cute fish drawing using as much paper.
It is also important to note, that drawing is not exact and you are learning. Start by lightly drawing each of your lines and if you do not have it exactly where you want it, erase and try again and continue lightly drawing till you have each line where you want them.
Head of the Fish
The first step is the curved lines to create the front of the fish. Start with one slightly curvy line that creates a simple nose shape. The second line starts slightly under the bottom part of the line and draw slightly curving down and to the right.
Next, draw a slightly curved line from the top of the first line to the end of the second line. This should create the fish's face.
Fish's Body
For the body of your fish, draw a simple half-circle or arch from the top of the fish to the bottom of the fish
Fish Fins
Next, is to draw on the tail of the fish. The easiest way is to draw a diagonal line up and out the top portion of the end of the fish. Then draw a second line down and out the bottom portion of the end of the fish. Draw a third line connecting the two lines with a slight v in the middle.
The next step is to draw the dorsal fin or the top fin. A simple arched line at the top of the fish is great.
The next step is to draw the pectural fin or the side fin. Simply draw a backward C right after the line marking the fish face on the sides of the fish.
It's now time to draw the fish eye. Draw one bigger larger circle with a smaller circle inside it at the top portion of the fish's face.
The last step is to add fish scales and a little detail to the fins. Small lines at the base of the top fin and the end of the tail. For the scales, draw small arched lines around the body of the fish.
The final step is to go over the drawing of a fish with a darker pencil and erase all the extra drawing lines.
Then use crayons, watercolor paint, watercolor pencils, or markers to color in your fish. This fish is more of a tropical fish so use various colors and create your own underwater magic!
Viola, you are drawing the cutest fish drawing ever!
