How To Draw a Graduation Cap

Below we're sharing an easy drawing lesson for a graduation cap. Don't forget to print out the printable graduation cap drawing tutorial at the bottom and follow along.

Grab a piece of drawing paper, a drawing pencil, and a ruler (optional) if you are looking for a straight edge when drawing the top of the cap. Here are the easy steps to how to draw a cap for graduation.

    Skull Cap

Step 1 - Graduation cap drawing

The first step is to draw the skull cap portion of the graduation cap. There are five lines in this step. The first line is one curved line or arch at the top. Then draw two vertical lines from each end of the curved line. These two lines should be approximately the same length.

Next, draw a small point between the two lines you just drew. Then draw a small arch from the end of the vertical lines to that middle point.

Step 2 - Graduation Cap Drawing

Next, we are going to draw a diamond shape for the top of the graduation cap. If it is easier for you to draw the complete diamond, go ahead and draw it, but draw lightly over the skull cap drawing from the last step. Otherwise, start with a diagonal line from each side of the skull cap shape up to approximately the same height as the top of the first arch. Then straight diagonal lines from those points to a point in the middle.

*To make this easy, try to draw each side of the diamond approximately the same length.

    Step 3 - Drawing a Graduation Cap

Next, draw two lines starting on the outside points of the top of the cap up to a point slightly inside the lines you drew in the previous step.

    Graduation Tassel

    Step 4 Draw Grad Cap

The next step is to draw a small graduation tassel off the top of the hat. Start with a small curved line from the middle of the top diagonal line on the left side of the hat (when looking at the hat). Stop right before you get to the bottom left diagonal line.

Starting at the same point, draw another small curved line slightly to the right of the previous line and stop at approximately the same spot. Draw a small circle at the end of those two lines.

Step 5 - How to Draw a Graduation Cap

The last part is to draw the end of the tassel. The end of a graduation tassel is a group of loosely hanging threads, so you can draw it as we did with one stray thread, or draw the bottom as a cone shape and draw lines from the small circle to resemble the hanging threads.

Step 6 - Grad Cap Drawing

The final step is to go over the drawing of a graduation cap with a darker pencil and erase all the extra drawing lines.
