Rainbow Sponge Painting Art Activity for Kids
One of my favorite things about art is using different tools in the process. When I was teaching I'd try to use so many cool things with my students that weren't paintbrushes. One of their favorites was always sponges! We'd use them as is or cut them into shapes. Kids can use sponges as stamps or swipe on their canvas. It's amazing to see how creative they get and the fun they have!
Rainbow Sponge Painting is my favorite! It's such a quick and easy way to paint a rainbow and turns out so beautiful.

You'll only need a sponge, paint in all rainbow colors, and paper. I recommend sturdy card stock.
- Add each color of paint onto the sponge in the order of the Rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
- Carefully flip over and place the sponge on one end of the paper.
- Move the sponge to reveal the Rainbow until you reach the other end of the paper.
- If you need to, add more paint and go over it again.
- Let dry and enjoy!
For an extra touch, I ripped up some white tissue paper and glued the ends to be clouds. Kids can add ripped paper, cotton balls, or poms if they like. I love how the tissue adds dimension and completes the rainbow.
This art activity is great for kids of all ages. It requires such little prep time it's perfect if you need a last-minute activity or some rainy/snowy day fun. For younger kids, try doing this in a sensory bin or table to contain the paint mess. Give kids more than one piece of paper and let them make all kinds of rainbow art. They'll have a blast!
I hope you love this art activity as much as I do and try it with your kids. If you do, share it on social media and tag me so I can see it! Find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
