    Family Halloween

    Halloween Spooky Fun Facts

Before using pumpkins to create jack o'lanterns, people used turnips! The history of using turnips comes from Ireland and a man nicknamed Stingy Jack.

At the end of this Irish folktale, Stingy Jack had only one coal to light his way back and he placed that lit coal inside of a turnip. Many, many years later, we began to place candles inside pumpkins instead of turnips.

Black cats are usually spooky to see, especially around Halloween, but black cats have been thought of as little protectors for a long time ago. So if you see one on Halloween, don't be frightened!

    Halloween Costume Kids

Halloween was introduced to the US in the late 18th century and early 19th century by Scottish and Irish immigrants. So it hasn't been here in the US for long but has changed over time.

A lot of cultures participate in Halloween celebrations differently. In the US, you may see children dress up in different costumes and go around getting candy from houses, or some towns will have costume contests.

In Scotland, children will dress up and instead of saying "trick-or-treat", they may recite a themed poem or maybe sing a short song and then receive sweets or small cakes in return.

    History of Halloween

    Simple Halloween Craft Pumpkins

My family loves to carve or paint pumpkins that we get from a pumpkin farm and we set the pumpkins out for Halloween night. Last year, we sliced open the painted pumpkins after Halloween and let the birds get the seeds.

Well, it turns out quite a few seeds were left behind because a couple of months ago, I noticed three plants popping up in our yard. We now have three ginormous pumpkin plants growing and we can't wait to see how many pumpkins we are able to get from these plants!

My oldest child is so excited and wants to set up a mini pumpkin stand for our neighborhood. She can add Halloween Cotton Ball Ghosts to her stand as well!

    Non-Spooky Halloween Crafts

This is an easy Halloween craft! You can't go wrong with cotton balls and googly eyes. My children love to decorate for holidays, so having simple crafts that are cute and easy for children and isn't "scary" spooky at Halloween, is great!

A fun Halloween is a good Halloween and fun ghost crafts are definitely a part of that. You make ghosts out of milk jugs, paper plates, and more.

An easy ghost craft is to get dum-dum suckers and place a small piece of white paper towel over them and tie it off with white string at the base of the sucker.

Then take a black marker and draw three black dots. Two for the eyes and one for the mouth. This is a fun treat to hand out to trick-or-treaters.
