Solar System Arts and Craft
We love fun crafts that will spark kids’ natural curiosity about the world. We’ve got tons of ideas and activities for kids with topics they love like dinosaurs, animals, and rainbows.
Today we’re reaching for the stars with another topic universally loved by kids -- the solar system! Kids love exploring spaceships, space shuttle, rockets, and heavenly planets. Outer space captures the imaginations of kids (and adults alike) probably because the moon and stars can clearly be seen —but remain elusive, just out of reach.
We’re tapping into kids’ creativity with a beloved planet craft. Using a few common household materials, we’re making easy carrot stamped solar system crafts. To get started, you’ll need a sturdy paper plate a few carrots cut to different sizes (so the diameters vary), and paint or rubber stamp pads. This hands-on activities is a fun project with simple instruction, awesome for kids of any age!
Space Crafts For Kids
We love this art project not just because it’s easy and fun but also educational. Space crafts teach kids the correct order of the planets and phases of the moon. This activity may even inspire them to do science experiments, science lessons, or other space activities.
You’ll use the cut end of the carrots to create all the different planets while teaching kids about our solar system. Kids love hands-on projects so much they might not even realize how much they are learning. If you’ve got a kiddo who prefers to think outside the box, you could even ditch the old Milky Way and have them create their own solar system or space universe.
Carrots are a material they don’t often work with, so they’ll love this new craft tool. (Bonus: you might even get them to munch on a few while they create. Don’t forget a yummy dip!)
You can use this and other solar system activities to create an entire outer space theme birthday party. Save some of the decorations and hang them for a fun space themed bedroom. (Don’t forget to check out our solar system color page, space color by number multiplication, and earth coloring pages! And if you are planning a birthday party, we’ve got plenty more ideas for games, party favors, and even more decorations.)
Kids Crafts
We love sharing awesome ideas and crafts kids love. Fun solar system projects for kids are great for all kinds of kids. They capture their imaginations and can be adapted to all grade levels. Younger kids can stick to the basics while older kids can dive deeper into the details and science of space life. We know you’ll have fun blasting off with this dazzling activity for kids!
Take the kids outside when they’re done with their easy carrot stamped solar system to star gaze. Lay out a blanket and play I-spy with constellations. They’ll love to compare their craft to the real night sky. Even better if you’ve got a telescope and can see the craters of the moon.
Whether you are a teacher looking for a science project to complement your lesson plans or a mom looking to fill summer hours, this space craft for kids is awesome. Who knows, maybe you have a future astronaut on your hands.
Supplies
- Paper plate (to use as a paint tray)
- Black cardstock
- Carrot
- Acrylic Craft Paint (red, orange, white, yellow, green, dark blue, light blue, purple)
- Knife
- Paper towel
- Toothpick
How to Make Solar System Craft
Using the end of a toothpick, dot little white circles or abstract shapes onto the cardstock to create a starry atmosphere.
Using a knife, place the carrot on a paper towel and cut the carrot into 3-4 pieces, approximately 1 ½ -2” long.
Creating the Sun
Place one of the thicker pieces into the yellow paint, and create a large sun. You can dab, swirl, or smear the yellow paint to create the sun.
Creating Venus
Using the same carrot, now dip it into the orange paint, and make one circle shape to the left above the sun to represent Venus.
Creating Earth
Dip another piece of carrot into the green paint, and stamp a slightly larger circle to the right above the sun.
Dip the same piece into the light blue paint, and overlap the green paint to create Earth.
Creating Mars
Place the smallest piece of carrot into the red paint, and stamp it between Venus and Earth to represent Mars.
Creating Jupiter
Dip the same larger piece of carrot you used to make the sun into the orange paint, and make a larger circle in the top right corner of your cardstock. Dip the carrot back into the red paint, and stamp it lightly over the orange to create some texture to represent Jupiter.
Creating Uranus
Next dip a medium sized piece of carrot into the light blue paint, and make a medium circle under Jupiter.
Using the toothpick, make a ring around the blue with the white paint to represent Uranus.
Creating Neptune
Dip the same carrot into the dark blue paint, and make a medium circle in the bottom right corner. Dip it into the purple paint, and dab it on top of the dark blue. Finish by dipping the carrot into the light blue paint, and layering it on top of the purple paint to create Neptune.
Creating Saturn
Using the same large carrot piece used to make Jupiter, dip it into the orange paint and make a large circle shape below Mars. Layer red and white paint on top of the orange, and swirl the carrot a bit to create texture.
Use the toothpick again to make two rings around Saturn.
Creating Mercury
Lastly, dip the smallest carrot back into the orange paint, and dot it close to the sun. Dip the carrot into the white paint, and layer on top of the orange paint to create Mercury. Let dry completely before enjoying your Solar System creation.
Let dry and viola... you have your own model and solar system art. We love this easy solar system project.
