We loved sharing our simple how to build a Framed Vertical Garden Recently Bing challenged me to use their Smart Search powered by Microsoft 8.1 to creatively inspired one of my DIY Projects.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!
For those that have been keeping up with our outdoor projects, knows that the latest was removing our old deck. As we're attempting to figure out what we want to whole backyard look and feel to be, we came to realize that we have a lot of concrete around the pool and back wall and not a lot of foliage or plants. This is the opposite look I would like to go for in the backyard, so of course this got me thinking. Why not break up that back wall with a vertical garden? Onto Smart Search I go and search vertical gardens. The visuals on Bing are INCREDIBLE! I highly recommend visiting Bing for more information about Smart Search! I just know you'll love as much as I do!
After seeing some amazing displays I realize that this project has to be low budget and preferable using some supplies we might already have! Then I come across this great tutorial from Transient Expression where she made a Vertical Succulent Garden out of a shadow box. I immediately decided what I wanted to do. Something similar, but on a larger scale. The wall we have is fairly large and so a small shadow box would look tiny in comparison, plus I didn't have a shadow box. So out to the garage I go and and low and behold.
I have this large old wooden frame. YES! I'm going to make a framed vertical garden box out of this frame!

First up was to paint it. We're looking for pops of color in our yard, and so out to the garage and we had this awesome green, so green it was!I did spray it with one coat of a sheer lacquer to protect it a bit. I tend to like the weathered look, so I didn't pay particular attention to making sure every inch was covered or double covered.
From this point, it was back to Bing to locate not only my nearest lumber supplies, but also my nearest garden center. Off we went!
At the lumber supply store we purchase one piece of 2 inch wood plus a piece of plywood the size of the frame. At the garden center we purchased some chicken wire and green moss as well as some cactus soil. Now it was a matter of assembly. We found all kinds of succulents we wanted to add to the vertical box, but figured we should get the box finished first before we think about adding the plants.
First we measured out the chicken wire to fit the back of the frame. Using a stapler, we stapled the chicken wire to the back of the frame.
Then we measured to built the box that will be on the back of the frame out of a two inch square piece of wood. Cut the pieces to a length as to make sure you cover the chicken wire, but that its not bigger than the front of the frame.Once the wood is cut it is ready to be attached. You can go about this one of two ways, if your frame is thick and can hold a screw from the back, holding the plywood in place, drill in from the back through the plywood back, the two inch frame, and about halfway through the frame. My frame was not terribly thick, so I ended up drilling in from the front. I added the screws through the two inch frame, but left some room for the plywood.Add the moss making sure to cover all the chicken wire. Now its time to add the soil. If you're going with a succulent vertical garden -- cactus soil is great for this.
After your box is full its time to attach the back panel of plywood by fully making sure the screws are screwed tightly in from the front.Vioala, we have ourselves a vertical garden. Now its just a matter of mounting the frame to the wall and adding the plants we want.
I want to thank Bing for sponsoring this post and inspiring me to beautify our backyard with this great new DIY Project! #ThisIsBing
