Holiday Traditions
One of my favorite holidays is Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving dinner in particular! I love making homemade cranberry sauce and shortbread biscuits and letting my crafty side come out this time of year.
A way that I get crafty is by setting up crafts for the children at the kids’ table. *note to parents: having crafts for children to do at November holiday gatherings is a significant help! One year, I printed off a painting titled Thanksgiving.
In this painting, you see kids helping and women cooking and prepping for the large meal to come. I had the kids talk about what they saw and what they liked about the picture, and then they got to draw their own Thanksgiving Day picture. We hung them up and it was great for everyone to see a mini gallery of drawings made by the kids.
Every year I make some sort of kids' craft available for the children and this Cornucopia Craft will be the craft this year!
History of the Cornucopia
The word "cornucopia" is derived from two Latin words: Cornu, meaning "horn," and Copia, meaning "plenty." Why is the Horn of Plenty a symbol of Thanksgiving though? It dates back to Greek and Roman traditions and was a symbol of abundance or overflowing.
Other cultures adopted the style, making horn-shaped baskets a symbol of abundance and a bountiful harvest, often for Thanksgiving. A Horn of Plenty indeed.
Now as styles have developed and changed over time, you may find different themes to cornucopias used as centerpieces at Thanksgiving or in the Fall season. I have seen these large horn-shaped containers at the kids’ tables that are filled with small toys for the kids to play with. My grandmother had one like this. She also had one that was designed with pumpkins, grapes, and other fruits and vegetables. It would lay in the center of the Thanksgiving table and pour out the “harvest”.
Fall Crafts for Fall Harvest
Sometimes for Thanksgiving, I will have my children make a Thanksgiving Tree and write what they are thankful for on the leaves. With this Fall craft, I would love to have my children write what they are thankful for on the construction paper used to make the fruit and vegetables that would then be attached to the cornucopia.
This would be a craft that I would date and write their names on. I use craft store-bought hat boxes to store certain crafts; this would be a new addition. This time of year is great to talk about thankfulness and though our harvests may differ from others, we can all find ways to be thankful and even share our bountiful harvest with others.
