Rice Krispie Frankenstein Treats
I do have a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post to refer to. Here is a quick step-by-step of how this is done. So simple you are going to want to make these homemade treats every Halloween from here on out.
Start by lining your 8x8 baking pan with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper. It is a good idea to then spray the bottom of the pan, bowl, rubber spatula, and knife with nonstick cooking spray. Set the pan to the side.
Melt the unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.
Add marshmallows and continue to stir using a rubber spatula.
Stir the mixture until the marshmallows and the butter melt making it a smooth buttery marshmallow mixture. As soon as it is smooth, remove it from heat.
Add a few drops of green food coloring to the mixture till you get the desired shade of green.
In a large bowl, pour your rice cereal and then fold in your green marshmallow mixture.
Stir till it is completely combined.
*Tip - if you like really gooey soft rice Krispie treats, add the last little bit of mini marshmallows left in the bag at this point. It makes the best rice crispy treats ever!
Add the green color rice crispies into the lined and sprayed pan and gently press down. Let the bars cool down for 1 hour at room temperature and cut them into nine pieces.
Making Royal Icing
Combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, water, and a few drops of black food coloring.
Mix until smooth. Add black frosting to a piping bag or plastic bag with a cut-off tip to decorate.
Decorating Green Rice Crispy Treat
Start by adding the black icing to the top of the treat to make Frankenstein’s hair.
Add a dot of icing to the back of each candy eye and add to treat right under the hair.
Add a smile to the rice crispy treat.
For added fun add a scar to Frankenstein's face.
The last step is to add chocolate candies to each side of the treat as Frankenstein's ears.
Viola, you have the cutest Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats!
How long do rice Krispies treats stay fresh?
I have found that wrapping each individual delicious treat in plastic wrap, will keep them fresh longest. If you store your Krispy treats in an airtight container, they are good for up to 3 days. Knowing how delicious they are, I highly doubt they will last that long.
Why did my Rice Krispie Treats turn out hard?
The most common reason for hard Rice Krispie treats is overcooked marshmallows. It's important to not heat the marshmallow mixture up too fast or on high heat. Heat on low heat until they are mixed all together and then remove them from the heat and fold in your cereal.
