All About Caterpillars
Caterpillars are such interesting creatures and form an important part of many ecosystems. They are best known for their life cycle, which sees them transform from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. This transformation, known as metamorphosis, is a wonder of nature and offers a multitude of teaching opportunities for children.
The "Very Hungry Caterpillar" book by Eric Carle is a favorite children's book that wonderfully illustrates this butterfly's life cycle and the days of the week. By creating a fun caterpillar craft inspired by this classic book, we can encourage children to delve deeper into the story, enhance their understanding of the caterpillar's life cycle, and further develop their love for reading.
Moreover, our caterpillar craft can be both a visual and physical way to explore the subject. Whether we're using paper circles to mimic the caterpillar's body or creating pipe cleaner antennae for added effect, crafting offers a touchable and interactive way to learn. And the best part? It's not only educational but also a whole lot of fun!
Paper Crafts
Paper crafting with children is always a rewarding experience. It allows kids to express their creativity, improve their fine motor skills, and learn valuable lessons about patience and perseverance. Our caterpillar craft is no exception - it's an easy craft that's as educational as it is entertaining.
Crafts like this one can be adapted for young children and older kids alike. For the younger ones, this could be a simple paper craft involving paper and some crayons. The older ones can enhance their caterpillars by adding facial features with googly eyes or creating a habitat with additional craft materials like pom-poms and toilet paper rolls.
It’s so great to see the pride and joy in a child's eyes when they've created something with their own hands. And our caterpillar craft is not just any craft, it's a creation that carries with it the powerful lessons of transformation and growth, mirroring the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly.
Fun Bug Craft

Our caterpillar craft falls into this category, offering children a fun and engaging way to explore the insect world. These bug crafts can help children overcome any fears or misconceptions they may have about insects and foster a greater appreciation for these important creatures.
In bug crafts, children can get creative with different materials. From creating a body of the caterpillar to giving it a distinctive look with pipe cleaner antennae, there are countless ways to make your caterpillar unique. It's an easy way to create an adorable little caterpillar that's as unique as the child who made it.
So, gather your craft supplies, pull out your copy of Eric Carle's book, and get ready for an adventure into the world of caterpillars. How To Make Simple Caterpillar Craft
Body of the Caterpillar
Start with the yellow and light green color paper.
Cut the green paper into four strips of paper. Then cut the yellow paper into one similar size strip.
Using two-sided tape (or craft glue), glue each piece into a circle tube, similar to paper chains and toilet paper rolls.
Then glue each of the tubes to each other to create the caterpillar body with the yellow on the end as the caterpillar head.
Head of the Caterpillar
Next, glue the googly eyes to the end of the yellow paper tube.
Next, grab the pipe cleaner, and bend it in half. Then cut it right in the middle to make two pieces of the same size.
Glue the end of each piece of pipe cleaner (the antennas) to the back of the yellow tube so they point out.
Caterpillar Leaf
Next is to make cute leaves for the easy caterpillar craft to sit on. Start by folding the dark green paper in half. Then cut out a wavy shape making sure it is longer than the length of the caterpillar body.
Accordion folds the leaf long ways similar to the middle fold from when you cut out the leaf shape.
The end result should give the leaf a fun texture.
Then grab your caterpillar and the leaf and glue the caterpillar on top of the leaf.
Viola, you have a cute little caterpillar!
