Fall Scarecrows
Did you know that scarecrows have been around for over 3000 years? The idea of something or someone sitting near their ripe crops to scare the birds away has been around for a very long time.
Some countries would use scary wooden figures and others would dress up themselves and wave off the crows. That was until they all realized they could stuff the clothes and scare the birds away from their ripe crops.
Fall is when many crops are ripe and that is when most are harvested. That is why scarecrows are associated with Autumn. You can see some of the other characters in our Fall Puzzles. It was those countries that would make the scarecrows scary that sparked the association with Halloween.
Somewhat Simple Scarecrow Craft
We love the idea of having a sweet scarecrow craft around to decorate the house for Fall. When looking for a somewhat simple scarecrow craft, I knew we needed to make it a popsicle stick craft, like our popsicle stick corn craft.
We thought about making a paper plate scarecrow, but love how easy craft sticks are to craft with and how inexpensive they are. Two great qualities if you want to make this with multiple kids.
With just a few simple supplies, that you may already have at home, you can make this easy scarecrow craft today!

How to Make a Scarecrow Craft for Kids
Start by gluing your sticks together. Depending on the thickness of your craft sticks, it could be seven or eight of the smaller sticks or 4 or 5 of the jumbo crafts sticks. Glue them onto two craft sticks going the opposite way on the back of the sticks. Cut off the ends of the back support sticks so you only see the front sticks.
Draw a slanted line from the top right-hand side down toward the left. This will be the scarecrow hat, so it should stay toward the top of the popsicle sticks.
Paint the upper parts of the popsicles orange as well as one full popsicle stick. Once they are dry, glue the single stick over the line.
Scarecrow Face
Cut two sets of circles from the cardstock. Two medium circles and two small circles. We love using scraps when we can. This is the perfect time to use up what you have.
Color the smaller circles black with your marker.
Glue the smaller black circles to the white circles to make the scarecrow eyes.
Glue the eyes to the front of the craft right below the hat.
Cut a small triangle out of the orange foam sheet.
Glue the nose onto the scarecrow face.
Using the marker adds a smile to the scarecrow's face.
Scarecrow Hair
Next, grab your yarn. We like the way the hemp yarn looks, but any yarn will do.
Cut the yarn into 4-5 inch pieces. We cut between 15 and 20 pieces of yarn.
Use another piece of yarn and tie a piece of yarn around the group of yarn pieces in the middle.
Glue the yarn to the back of the scarecrow hat.
Viola, you have a sweet and simple scarecrow craft.
We hope you enjoy this cutie as much as we enjoyed showing you how to make it!
