This Uncle Sam Craft for Kids is an easy craft for kids of all ages. These are great patriotic crafts for the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or any other occasion in celebration of the red, white, and blue.

    I want you Uncle Sam

    Who is Uncle Sam?

A man by the name of Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from New York, would supply the US Army with beef during the War of 1812. The barrels were stamped with "U.S." representing the United States, but soldiers would refer to the beef as Uncle Sam's. A newspaper printed the story and Uncle Sam spread as the nickname for the U.S. federal government.

A political cartoonist named Thomas Nast created the popular image of Uncle Sam with the white beard and stars and stripe suit that is associated with Uncle Sam today. It was James Montgomery Flagg's version of Uncle Sam pointing straight ahead with a recruiting poster that states "I want you for U.S. Army."

Now the images of Uncle Sam and Uncle Sam's hat represent all things patriotic holidays. This then makes it a super fun 4th of July craft or even an American flag craft.

    Crafts for Kids

No matter if it's for a specific holiday or an ordinary day throughout the year, there is always room for kid's crafts. There are some craft supplies that we love to always have on hand that can be made into great crafts. These include popsicle sticks, toilet paper rolls, paper plates, and construction paper.

Having those on hand for July 4th is a great way to keep kids busy who may need a little downtime from the fun in the sun. We also like to have red paper, white cardstock, blue construction paper, and cotton balls on hand to make all kinds of fun patriotic theme crafts.

Supplies for 4th of July Uncle Sam Craft

    Uncle Sam Craft Supplies
    • White paper plate
    • Acrylic paint (red, white, blue)
    • Paintbrush
    • 10 Popsicle sticks
    • Foam sheet (blue, yellow pink) or pink, yellow, or blue paper.
    • Scissor
    • Glue gun & stick
    • A pair of googly eyes

In the case you do not have googly eyes, you can use a black marker to make the eyes easy.

How To Make Uncle Sam Craft

Paint the popsicle sticks red and white

Paint three popsicle sticks red and three white leaving the bottom of the stick natural wood.

    Paint tow sticks blue

Next, the simple step is to paint two of the sticks completely blue

    Cut Popsicle Sticks

Cut both the curve parts of the remaining 2 popsicle sticks

Cut the two remaining sticks the length of red and white stripes popsicle width.

Arrange the popsicle sticks alternately in color. (red, white, red, white...)

Grab your glue gun and glue stick and plug it in and heat it up.

Then glue the two cut popsicle sticks at the back, for them to stick together

Turn the popsicle sticks over and glue the cut pieces to the back of the red and white sticks.

    Uncle Sam's Beard

Align them together, the popsicle sticks above, the blue popsicles in the middle and the paper plate below them, and glue them using the glue gun.

The next step is to cut the paper plate into a C shape. We start by cutting the paper plate in half. Then cut the center out in a "U". The only thing you need to make sure is to you do not cut it wider than the red and white sticks. This is going to be his beard, so you want to make sure it fits on his face. The last step is to slightly round the edges of your paper plate.

: Add the pair of googly eyes and cut nose at the space that is not painted. Get the paper plate and cut it in half, take the other half then cut another half circle and curve the edges, forming a letter C.

The next step is to cut a small nose out of the pink foam. Then glue it to the bottom middle of the red and white popsicle sticks on the natural wood space. Then add the googly eyes right above it.

cut yellow stars out of the yellow form

Using the yellow foam, cut out three stars. You can draw the stars on the back of the foam and cut out the edges. I have also included a free printable star template at the bottom of the post. You can also use a star craft punch if you have it.

Glue the blue popsicle sticks to the bottom of the hat

The next step is to glue all the items onto the face of uncle sam. First start by gluing the beard onto the sticks, right under the nose. Next glue the first blue stick right above your eyes and the top of your beard. The second blue stick is just glued right above it. The last step is to cut two small pieces out of the white foam for the mustache. These can be a crescent shape and then cut the tip off each piece right under the nose.

Glue the stars to the blue popsicle sticks.

The last step is to glue the yellow stars to the blue strip which is the brim of Uncle Sam's Hat.

    Crafting Tips

    1. Make sure to glue the materials together correctly and tightly or else they will
      be destroyed quickly.
    2. Be careful when using the scissor and the glue gun.
    3. Make sure to paint carefully so you do not get the paint everywhere
    4. Choose the proper materials to achieve the aspired outcome
    5. Let your creativity flow in your works!
