- August is named after Augustus Caesar (grandnephew of Julius Caesar), the first Roman emperor.
- August is the last full month of Summer and the end of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere (below the equator)
- August is popularly known as harvest month.
- The Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich in 1762 - August is now named National Sandwich Month.
- August is referred to as the dog days of Summer. This is in reference to the hottest and most humid months and that is typically August.
- On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. This historic event helped inspire many people to work for civil rights and equality!

- The first successful communication via transatlantic telegraph cable was made in August 1858.
- The ancient Romans believed that August was a month for honoring the goddess of grain, Ceres.
- The Perseid meteor shower, one of the best meteor showers of the year, usually peaks in August.
- The famous painting, the Mona Lisa, was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris on August 21, 1911. It was missing for over two years before being found, making it even more famous and mysterious!
