- The celebration is based on the Lunar calendar and is often referred to as the Lunar New Year Celebration.
- Each year marks the year of a different zodiac animal. 2024 will be the year of the dragon.
- Red is the color of the Chinese New Year and is considered lucky. According to folklore, red scares away the mythical monster 'Nian' and prevents bad luck.
- The Chinese New Year celebrations last for 15 days. That's two weeks of celebration!

- Paper Dragon Puppet Template
- Colored craft papers
- Brown paper bag
- Sharpie
- Craft glue
- Pencil

How to Make Paper Bag Dragon
Start by printing out the free template. The template includes a head, belly, 2 legs, 2 wings, 2 wing outlines, ears, tail, tail scales, blush, and eyes.
Select pink and 3 or more different shades of green-colored craft papers. You can select any other color for your dragon, but we’re crafting a green paper bag dragon puppet. Trace the pattern pieces on the selected craft papers and cut them out.
Dragon Wings
Glue the tail scale cutouts along the narrow-top side of the tail cutout. Attach the wing outlines on the wing cutouts and attach the narrow ear cutouts along the top side of the ear cutouts.
Dragon Head
Next, glue to attach the eye cutouts on the head cutout.
Then glue the ear patterns on both sides of the head patterns’ top end and attach the blush cutouts near the bottom part of the head pattern.
If necessary, cut extra parts of the blush patterns. Use a gel pen or sharpie to draw the nose and mouth lines of the papercraft dragon puppet.
Dragon Body
Measure the bag size and cut out a piece of paper to cover either side of the paper bag. This will be the body part of the dragon puppet. Attach the belly cutout in the middle of the prepared paper (body pattern).
Glue the leg cutouts on both sides of the body.
Next, glue the tail on either side of the body.
Attaching Paper Bag
Grab the paper bag.
Attach the body to the paper bag.
Glue and attachFlatten the bottom end of the paper bag with the body pattern and then attach the head pattern on the bottom end to complete the paper bag dragon puppet. the wing patterns on both sides of the paper bag, between the side folds of the bag.
Flatten the bottom end of the paper bag with the body and then attach the head on the bottom end to complete the paper bag dragon puppet. Viola, you have a fun dragon puppet craft and a fun Chinese New Year Craft!
