The Month of May
The month of May is all kinds of fun! Some of the stats about this month include:

- How Many Days Are In May? There are 31 days in the month of May
While the current calendar (Gregorian calendar) has May as the fifth month of the year, that wasn't always the case. In the Roman calendar (Julian calendar), May was the third month of the year. January and February did not exist in that calendar.
May Symbols
Each month of the year has a few different symbols within the month. There are birthstones associated with each month, there is a monthly flower and there are astrological symbols. These are all based on the month you were born. Those people that are born in May - May Babies!

Holidays in May
May is the second full month of Spring in the northern hemisphere (above the equator) and Fall or Autumn in the southern hemisphere. There Spring is always one of our favorite seasons as flowers are starting to bloom, the grass and trees are green and we're finally able to get outside and warm up a bit. Fun May Facts
- May Day is a public holiday celebrated on the first of May or the first Monday in May (in the United Kingdom). It is an ancient festival marking the first day of Summer (the current day is in Spring) with dancing, singing, and cake!
- At one point, May was once considered a bad luck month to get married. There was a poem that said, “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.”
- May is named after the Greek goddess Maia, the Greek Goddess of Spring. The Romans had a similar goddess named Bona Dea where they would hold a festival in the month of May for her.
- No other month of the year starts and ends on the same days of the week as May
- The empire state building in New York first opened on May 1, 1931
- Blue Jeans were invented in May of 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis.
- The phrase "April Showers bring May Flowers" comes from a poem from the 1500s by Thomas Tusser.
- Some of the famous people with a May birthday are John F Kennedy (US President), John Wayne, Dwayne Johnson, George Clooney, Tim McGraw, Audrey Hepburn, and Bob Dylan.
- May is the only month of the year where the day of the week it starts and ends on do not match any other month.
Spring Facts
- The first day of Spring is marked by the Spring Equinox which is the day when the number of hours of daylight is equal to the number of hours of darkness.
- Starting at the Spring Equinox marks the beginning of 6 months straight of daylight at the North Pole. Equally the South Pole sees 6 months of darkness
- Tornados are more common in Spring.
- Ducks hatch is Spring
Cinco de Mayo Facts
- This translates as the fifth of May.
- It's a holiday celebrating when the Mexican victory over France in the Battle of Puebla.
- Over time it has become more of a celebration of Mexican culture.
- Cinco de Mayo IS NOT Mexico's Independence Day.
Mother's Day Fun Facts
- In 1914 (at the start of World War I), with help from Anna Jarvis (an activist who didn't have any children of her own) Woodrow Wilson officially declared a United States national holiday. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
- The most popular Mother's Day gift is a card (homemade or purchased)
- Mother's Day is the day when the most phone calls are made.
